Year Six - Schemes of Work
Autumn Term 2007

English

  • Text:  fiction genres, autobiographies and diaries
  • Comprehension and creative writing will be based on the above genre of texts
  • Preparation for 11+ exam using the textbook Prep Book 1 and past papers
  • Class reader: The children will study a selection of short stories from a range of authors in order to revise narrative structure and creative writing.
  • Personal reading will be monitored
  • Sentence – revision of word classes; connectives; complex sentences; range of punctuation including colon, semi-colon, brackets, dashes and parenthetic commas
  • Word– Violet Brand Spelling Made Easy, word roots, suffixes, prefixes and connectives

Mathematics

  • Number – Addition, subtraction, long/short multiplication and division. Mental and calculator tasks. Estimation. Rounding. Place value. Square and cube numbers.
  • Fractions/ decimals. Time. Directed and negative numbers.      
  • Algebra – simple equations. Addition/subtraction of like terms. Formulae.
  • Problem solving – involving money, time and algebra.
  • Shape/space and measure – ancient measures, imperial and metric units. 2D shapes and circle properties.
  • Handling data – collecting and representing data. Conversion graphs, probability, range, mean, median and mode.
  • Practice CE 11+ papers and weekly mental arithmetic tests.

  • Safety Rules.
  • Acids and alkalis.
  • Electrical circuits.
  • Forces.
  • Magnets

French

  • Revision and extension of home and school vocabulary.
  • Activities in town and on holiday, school subjects.
  • The world about us.
  • Personal description.
  • Grammar – Present tense verbs.

  • Numbers, Days, Months, Alphabet.
  • Where you live and come from

Latin

  • Introduction to ‘The Roman Family’. The Roman Empire.
  • Singular and plural vocabulary. Adjectives.

History

  • Sources of evidence- primary and secondary sources.
  • Victorian Britain.

Geography

  • Population – Distribution. Changes in birth and death rate. Migration – push and pull factors e.g. from Mexico to USA
  • Italy an EU country.
  • Global knowledge – Continents, oceans, major rivers etc. Europe – main geographical features, countries and capital cities.

Religious Education

  • About the Bible. Introduction to the Old Testament. God as Creator. The Second
  • Creation Story. Cain and Abel. Noah and the Flood. Our responsibility for the environment. Abraham – The man who trusted God. Near sacrifice. Jacob and Esau.

Art

  • Design – texture, shape, pattern, collage & printing based on various themes.
  • Response to music and moods.
  • Seasonal work.

Design Technology

  • Drawing techniques – orthographic, isometric, single point perspective, two- point perspective.
  • Tipper trucks – incorporating pneumatics.

Information and Communication Technology

  • Multimedia presentation.
  • Revision of previous topics.

Music

  • Regular singing and ear training sessions including preparation for the Carol Service.
  • Listening skills: Themes and variations – The  Enigma Variations by Elgar.

Physical Education

  • Football, swimming, netball, rugby, unihoc and a variety of adventure activities.
